E KAD MalaysiaPUTRAJAYA: There will be no extension to the June 30, 2017 deadline for employers to get the temporary E-kad for their illegal workers.

Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said despite anticipating one million applications for the E-kad or enforcement card, he was confident that his men could handle the workload without having to extend the deadline.

“My advice to employers is this – apply for the cards now as there will be no extension. Don’t wait till the last minute to register for the card.

“If you miss this opportunity, there might be no other chance in future,” he said.

Employers in the manufacturing, services and agriculture sectors who have foreigners working for them illegally can apply for the temporary card until June 30, at the Immigration headquarters or its state offices.

The card is issued free of charge and employers need to be present with their employees when applying for it.

To get the E-kad, workers must fulfill several criteria set by the department – they must be employed, have no criminal record, pass a medical test and are not on the department’s watchlist.

Mustafar said the validity of the card was until Feb 15, 2018, and this was sufficient time for employers to complete the process of registering their illegal workers.

“After Feb 15 next year, the department will conduct swoops on illegals and those who are caught will have to face the law. There will be no compromise,” he warned.

The E-kad functions as a temporary confirmation of employment for illegal workers and to replace valid travel documents from the respective embassies.

After registration, employers must apply for their foreign workers’ passports as well as work permits.
